Tips for staying safe in your home
Most thieves are looking for an "easy mark." You can discourage thieves with a few simple actions:
- Light the outside of your home to make it more visible to your neighbors. Outside motion detector lights on ALL sides of your home can make it almost impossible for a burglar to enter without being seen.
- Lock vehicles at all times. Criminals could access your home with your garage door opener!
- Lock all windows, doors and sheds.
- Know your neighbors.
- Leave all blinds closed.
- Trim bushes near doors to reduce hiding places for burglars.
- Install dead-bolt locks on all outside doors.
- Install peepholes in all outside doors.
- Keep a list of your valuables and their serial numbers. A videotape, photograph or sales receipts will help with insurance claims. Consider engraving highly valuable items, like electronics.
- Close your garage door. An empty garage says you’re not at home. Thieves can easily steal bikes, lawnmowers and other valuables. Burglars can close the garage door and take their time breaking into your home.
- If you will be out of town, EVEN FOR A DAY, let the Watch Committee or your neighbors know. This includes when pets will not be at home.
- Sign up for the Neighborhood Watch if you haven't already. You can access the form on the documents page.
- Ask your neighbors if they are signed up for the Neighborhood Watch and if we have their e-mail address for real-time updates. Contact info@turnberryhoa.org to sign up for these real-time updates.
- Consider getting a security system.
- Find a neighbor near you that works from home or stays at home; let them know you are not home during the day.
- Sleep with your vehicle’s keys on your nightstand. If you have an alarm on it, you can push the button if you hear someone breaking into your home. This is quicker than dialing 911!
